Grand Chef Throwdown
The Grand Chef Throwdown is an unforgettable evening of epicurean splendor showcasing the talents of more than 30 of the best chefs from San Diego and Baja. The event benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and will be held Saturday, September 30 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. Competing chefs will present their savory hors d’oeuvre or sweet dessert to a Culinary Council of top chefs, industry experts, and food critics, who will determine the winners of the Chef Flor Franco Award for Culinary Excellence in both the savory and sweet categories.
Evening Timeline (times approximate, more definite timeline to be sent out closer to the event):
- 2:00pm-4:30pm – chef load-in and food prep, specific times to be assigned
- 4:30pm-6:00pm – tasting and blind judging by the Culinary Council
- 6:00pm-7:15pm – guest tastings and reception
- 7:15pm-8:00pm – chef-only reception
- 8:15pm – award presentations, all chefs on ballroom stage
- 9:00pm-11:30pm – dancing in the ballroom and guest dessert tastings in the back of the ballroom - TBD
Chef Expectations:
- Each chef will provide a savory hors d’oeuvre or sweet dessert prepared in advance or at provided station. Please note that the Sheraton allows portable fryers, steamers, open flame grills and propane grills.
- Chefs need to provide enough savory hors d’oeuvres or sweet desserts to serve approximately 400 guests. (The portion requirement may fluctuate based on final attendance. You will be notified seven days prior to the event of anticipated attendance numbers.)
- The Sheraton will provide two 6’ tables with cloths; one for presentation and one for backup. Chefs will provide food, table décor and their own napkins, plates and utensils. No use of the Sheraton’s kitchen will be permitted.
- All chefs need to have Culinary Council tastings ready for judging at 4:30pm.
- Each chef is asked to donate (2) gift certificates for dinner for two at your restaurant (with an expiration date of 9/30/24 or later please) which will be used for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s auction.
- Participating chefs are asked to promote their involvement with the Grand Chef Throwdown through social media. The Foundation will also recognize the restaurants and chefs for their participation through Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
