Receiving a Cystic Fibrosis diagnosis is a life changer. Just ask my friend Oliver. Oliver is 11 years old and has CF. Oliver’s parents Jill and Ben Pleune are friends, former neighbors and Jill even employs my daughter Charlotte at her clothing store, Sloan. Oliver, Jill and Bens’ lives were changed when Oliver was born with CF. A typical day for Oliver involves multiple breathing treatments, enzymes before meals and snacks along with nightly G-tube feedings. Oliver was hospitalized in August for a week to hopefully give him a kick start before the school year began. Despite the fact he already had a port for IV antibiotics and a feeding tube for nightly nutritional supplements, which they thought would mean an easy stay, there were complications. They discovered another allergic reaction to yet another IV medication. Oliver has been hospitalized 12 times in his 11 years. You would think this would get easier for Oliver and his parents….Guess What? It doesn’t. CF is a full of complications for Oliver and all the other CF patients around the world. Managing CF is a Full Time Job. Imagine being a parent in this situation. Imagine being a child living with CF. Imagine being a sibling of a CF patient….
…Great strides are being made as we speak to help patients with CF. The FDA has approved a new drug, Trikafta, that treats the underlying defect in Cystic Fibrosis. Jill and Ben are praying Trikafta can improve Oliver’s lung function by 10-12%, decrease lung infections by 65%, improve his quality of life and increase his life span.
