ABOUT CYSTIC FIBROSIS
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is rare, genetic disease in which a defective gene causes a thick build up of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. The buildup of mucus can lead to extensive lung damage, respiratory failure, malnutrition, liver disease, and gastrointestinal issues, among other complications.
Close to 40,000 people in the United States have CF and about 1,000 new cases of CF are diagnosed each year. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation funds research to address every aspect of cystic fibrosis- from genetic cause of disease to complications that impact daily life. While we have reached the highest recorded median age of survival at 56 years old, that is only the median age of survival for a child born today with cystic fibrosis. Those who were born with CF just twenty, thirty and forty years ago, still face the possibility of a shortened battle.
Alongside the CF Community, we are helping to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives. Hosting our event will bring us one step closer to finding a cure for all people living with cystic fibrosis.
